Computing at Yew Tree Primary School
At Yew Tree Primary School, we believe that developing computing skills is essential to prepare children for the next stage of their education and life in a digital world.
Early Years (Nursery & Reception):
Children use a range of technology to support and enhance learning across the curriculum. For example, they use iPads to listen to and watch animated stories, explore videos linked to topics, and play games that develop phonics and number skills.
Key Stage 1 & Key Stage 2:
We follow the Kapow Computing Scheme of Work, which ensures lessons are engaging, progressive, and meet the aims of the National Curriculum. Children learn coding and develop their understanding of software and hardware through a variety of practical tasks.
Digital Literacy:
Alongside computing lessons, we integrate technology into everyday learning. Children use computers and iPads to research, create presentations, and develop skills in Word Processing, PowerPoint, and Excel. We also use a range of educational apps to enhance learning across the curriculum.
Our aim is to ensure every child becomes confident, safe, and creative in their use of technology.

Computing Vocabulary
When teaching computing, the use of the correct vocabulary is essential to ensure that everyone understands the subject-specific terminology. As the children progress through the computing scheme of work, they revisit and build on previousy taught vocabulary. There are clear definitions to support staff when they are delivering lessons and teaching the children new skills.
Online Safety
We understand that e-safety is an important area of concern and have a specific e-safety policy which is displayed in all classrooms. Teachers ensure that children know how to use the internet as safely as possible and are aware of the procedure for reporting material which may be unsuitable.
